In this series we have installed OpenTX Companion 2. First we need to enable some features to ensure that we can run lua scripts. Here is where we need to set a few options for our firmware download. Make sure you have the right model selected for your radio under radio type 1. Under Build Options, check noheli 2lua 3flexr9m 4. Near the bottom check the box beside Append version number to FW file name 5. Click OK. If you do not reduce the amount of characters in the filename, you will not be able to update the boot loader.
We will be using this file to flash the firmware to the radio and update the boot loader. Make sure you know where you saved it. In our example we saved it to a folder on the desktop named x-lite. Power on your radio in bootloader mode. If you are not sure how to do this click here for x-lite, x9d, qx7 instructions.
In bootloader mode on your radio, you will see something similar to the below image. Click Write to TX. Click Close. Unplug your radio from your computer. Your radio in the bootloader mode should reflect the new version installed. Open OpenTX Companion. If you have multiple radio profiles make sure you have selected the correct one. Click the download button in the top menu.
Download the one with the date that is most recent. In our example we are sent to the x-lite sd contents download. The latest file here is sdcard-taranis-x Unzip the file contents into a folder on your computer. The files you unzip from this zip file will replace the contents of the sd card in your radio.
In our example we are going to extract the zip file contents into a folder called new SD contents.In most of our quads fly on Betaflight. However, there are some other options out there EmuFlight, Cleanflight…. For one, we get to enjoy a pretty rapid rate of tech improvement.

SD contents is the entire content on the sd card in your radio. It contains things like audio files and crossfire lua scripts. If you have custom audio or other files, keep that in mind when you update SD contents. There are two ways you can back up your sd contents. One is by removing the SD card from your radio, putting it in a micro sd reader and plugging it into your computer. You can also plug your radio into your computer and see the sd contents and copy them that way.
Turn your radio on. Plug the radio into your computer. On your computer you will have two new removable drives show up. The drive letters will vary from computer to computer.
In our example, F and E drive are now present. The drive that we want should have contents similar to the following. In our example, E drive is one we want. We know this because it has a file called opentx. Right click and paste them in the backup folder on your computer. You can also drag and drop them. As usual with each major release new SD card contents are needed, information is on the page. Previous major version, now stable and still supported for normal use, but no new features or bugfixes will be implemented. This version drops support for AVR-based radios, for those see 2. Downgrading models and settings is not possible, so should you want to switch back to an older major version you will need to either reload your backup or start from scratch again. I updated the T16 to OpenTx following your instructions. I updated to version: openTx-t I updated the SD card as well. All the input and output from BetaFlight freezes. When you click on the tabs, the curser just spins. So it appears to be an issue with the T16 after it binds. Do you have any idea of what is going on here?

To do that we first need to put the Taranis into Bootloader Mode. For the X-Lite, you need to hold down the trim button at the center make sure all 4 trims are pressedthen power on the TX.
Once the Taranis is in bootloader mode, you can plug in a USB cable in the radio and connect it to your computer. It will read models and display them in a separate window. It will create a file that can be restored to your Taranis.Taranis X9D: Upgrading Firmware
Select a location where you want to keep the backup and save the file. Then just select the copy of your SD card here. This allows OpenTX companion to populate the model image selector with the images that are on the card, and do the same for audio files.
This is the logo that shows up on the screen at power up. In Application Settings tab you need to select all the options. Each firmware version might come with unique SD Card folder structure and content.
If you want to keep your custom sounds, scripts etc. Folder hierarchy might change from version to version, but it largely remains the same.
It is important to delete the old content on the SD Card, and copy the new content there. As always, flashing Release Candidate firmware can be risky because of potential bugs and issues.
